The Sustainable Development Report 2024, published by the United Nations, presents a sobering assessment of global progress toward achieving the 2030 Agenda. The report reviews progress made each year on the Sustainable Development Goals since their adoption by the 193 UN Member States in 2015. Published on the eve of the UN Summit of the Future, the Sustainable Development Report 2024 recommends a set of key reforms to the UN system to meet the challenges of the 21st century. This year’s edition also presents a new index of countries’ support to UN-based multilateralism and discusses long-term pathways to attain sustainable food and land systems.
With just six years left, the report reveals that only 17% of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are currently on track, while more than one-third have either stalled or regressed. It highlights how compounding global crises—including the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, rising geopolitical tensions, and conflicts—have significantly undermined development efforts. The report also draws attention to deepening inequalities, with millions pushed into extreme poverty and hunger. In response to these urgent challenges, it calls for bold and transformative action, emphasizing the need for stronger policies, increased investment, and international cooperation to accelerate progress, protect the planet, and ensure that no one is left behind.
