The UNIDO report Sustainable Cities: Platforms for Low Carbon Industrialization and Turning Today’s Cities into Livable Economic Powerhouses explores how urban centers can serve as engines of inclusive, sustainable growth and innovation. It emphasizes the dual opportunity presented by rapid urbanization, especially in developing countries to drive economic development while addressing climate change. Cities, accounting for the majority of global CO₂ emissions, can leverage their unique contexts to experiment with green technologies, foster clean energy innovation, and promote low-carbon industrialization. The report highlights how industries can contribute not only to job creation and income generation but also to advancing climate action, particularly through green infrastructure and cleaner production processes. UNIDO positions itself as a key actor, supporting integrated and climate-resilient urban planning and facilitating city-to-city knowledge exchange.
To build resilient, inclusive, and environmentally sound urban economies, the report outlines four major interventions: promoting green technology at the city scale, embedding climate risk into planning and governance, fostering urban inclusiveness especially gender equity and increasing multi-stakeholder partnerships. These actions align with global goals, including the SDGs, by addressing urban mobility, energy systems, and institutional frameworks for planning. Through case studies in countries like Senegal, Malaysia, India, China, and South Africa, the report illustrates how cities can lead in sustainable industrial transformation. UNIDO underscores the need for tailored, collaborative approaches that balance economic growth with environmental stewardship and social well-being, making cities hubs of innovation, opportunity, and climate resilience.
