The WGI 2024, produced by the World Bank and updated annually in September with data through 2023, evaluates governance quality across over 200 economies using six composite dimensions—Voice & Accountability; Political Stability & Absence of Violence; Government Effectiveness; Regulatory Quality; Rule of Law; and Control of Corruption—each scored on a uniform scale from –2.5 to +2.5.
These scores integrate data from more than 30 diverse sources—ranging from expert assessments to surveys of citizens and businesses—and employ a transparent Unobserved Components Model that includes margins of error. While WGI offer a trusted cross-country governance benchmark, they are intended primarily for policy research and analysis rather than for credit or investment decisions, and should ideally be paired with in-depth, country-level diagnostics due to inherent measurement limitations and lag in capturing rapid governance changes.
