L’Oréal & IBM Revolutionizing Sustainable Beauty with AI
PARIS (Enmaeya News) — L’Oréal has teamed up with IBM to develop sustainable cosmetic formulations using generative artificial intelligence (AI). The collaboration, which utilizes IBM’s GenAI technology, aims to help L’Oréal enhance its use of renewable raw materials, reduce energy consumption and material waste, and accelerate product innovation. The core of this partnership is a custom AI foundation model designed to assist L'Oréal’s Research & Innovation teams in creating high-performing, sustainable cosmetics. The AI will analyze large data sets to understand how renewable ingredients perform in formulations, enabling the creation of new products, the reformulation of existing ones, and the optimization of production at scale.
This initiative is part of L’Oréal’s broader strategy to achieve greater inclusivity, sustainability, and personalization in its products. Both companies describe the AI model as a major advancement in the beauty industry, combining chemistry and technology. For L’Oréal, the partnership is key to its digital transformation and to meeting its 2030 sustainability goal of sourcing most of its formulas from bio-sourced materials and circular economy principles. IBM’s AI expertise will help L’Oréal extract valuable insights from its extensive formulation data to create eco-friendly products. In addition, L’Oréal has recently launched an AI-powered device designed to predict skin issues before they become visible.
