PARIS (Enmaeya News) — A new Coalition for Environmentally Sustainable AI has been launched, bringing together more than 100 partners, including 37 technology companies, 11 countries and five international organizations.

Led by France, the U.N. Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the initiative aims to reduce artificial intelligence’s environmental footprint while maximizing its role in sustainability.

Announced at the AI Action Summit in Paris, the coalition focuses on developing standardized impact metrics, advancing AI-powered climate solutions, promoting energy-efficient AI infrastructure and encouraging sustainable AI research and policies. While AI contributes to climate monitoring and pollution reduction, its high energy consumption and electronic waste pose growing concerns.

U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres said AI can be a force for climate action if designed with efficiency and sustainability in mind. Despite AI ethics guidelines adopted by more than 190 countries, regulatory frameworks remain limited. Initiatives such as the Frugal AI Challenge, the Green Digital Action Initiative and UNEP’s 2025 Guide aim to accelerate AI sustainability.

“This coalition unites key stakeholders to ensure AI’s net impact on the planet is positive,” said Golestan (Sally) Radwan, UNEP’s chief digital officer.
