COPENHAGEN (Enmaeya News) — Starting June 17, Copenhagen will expand its CopenPay initiative, offering rewards to environmentally conscious tourists as part of an effort to promote sustainable tourism.
Travelers who arrive by train and stay for more than four days will be eligible for free bike rentals. Visitors who use bicycles, pick up litter or take other eco-friendly actions will receive discounts at 90 participating sites, including the National Museum and CopenHill.
Other perks include free yoga classes and vegetarian meals. The campaign will run through late August and will be promoted throughout the city and on social media.
The initiative builds on a 2024 pilot program that drew 75,000 participants. During the trial, bike rentals increased by 29%, large amounts of trash were collected, and 98% of participants said they would recommend the program.
Eco-friendly businesses such as Goboat, which provides solar-powered electric boats, also saw strong participation. Hundreds took advantage of free rentals in exchange for helping clean local waterways.
The program supports Copenhagen’s goal of becoming a leading green tourism destination and reducing the environmental impact of travel, especially from transportation.
