Beirut, Lebanon (Enmaeya News) — Lebanese Public Works and Transport Minister Fayez Rasamny unveiled a nationwide plan last May aimed at rehabilitating and maintaining roads and bridges, calling it a project that “connects everything” in the country.
Rasamny said the ministry had developed the plan based on the 2024 and 2025 state budgets, describing it as a “transparent and comprehensive” initiative intended to span several years.
“We are launching it today and will pursue it over several years, hoping that future ministers will continue to implement it,” he said. “What we are doing today is a national project that connects all of Lebanon.”
The Minister also referred to $175 million in funds allocated to repair infrastructure damaged during the latest war on Lebanon.
To ensure a unified approach, he called on local municipalities to help classify road conditions across the country. He emphasized that the ministry’s current approach differs from previous practices, noting that corruption and lack of transparency have long plagued public works projects.
“We have included in the specifications all the basics of public safety,” he said. “Our working method is different from those adopted in the past.”
As part of the new strategy, road lighting will use hybrid systems powered by both electricity and solar energy.
The minister had previously launched a rehabilitation project in mid-April to upgrade the main road linking Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport to the capital, with the goal of improving road conditions and enhancing safety.
Likewise, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam inaugurated a separate lighting project covering Beirut’s Raouche Corniche and nearby areas along the city’s waterfront.
These developments come amid Lebanon’s ongoing economic crisis, which has severely affected infrastructure maintenance since 2019.
