Beirut, Lebanon (Enmaeya News) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants announced that Lebanon has been elected to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2026–2028 term. The election took place at the U.N. headquarters in New York.

This comes shortly after Lebanon was also chosen as one of the vice presidents of the 80th session of the U.N. General Assembly, which will be led by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.

In a statement, the ministry said the win was "the result of efforts led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants through Lebanon’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.” It added that “this victory will strengthen Lebanon’s role at the United Nations and its active participation in multilateral work.”

The ministry also said, “This win reflects the international community’s trust in Lebanon and in the role, it plays as a founding and active member of the United Nations.”

What This Means for Lebanon

ECOSOC is one of the U.N.’s six main organs and plays a key role in shaping global policies on economic, social, and environmental issues. It oversees progress on the Sustainable Development Goals, coordinates humanitarian efforts, and facilitates international cooperation.

Lebanon’s seat on the council gives it a stronger voice in these discussions and allows it to help influence decisions that affect countries worldwide. It also reflects continued international support for Lebanon’s presence and contributions on the global stage.

This membership offers Lebanon opportunities to strengthen diplomatic ties, push for development aid, and participate more deeply in global solutions to shared issues.

Lebanon’s upcoming term on ECOSOC is not its first. The country previously served on the council in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Its election for the 2026–2028 term marks a renewed presence on this influential U.N. body.
