Washington, United States (Enmaeya News) — Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has signed a 20-year agreement with Constellation Energy to source nuclear power from the Clinton Clean Energy Center in Illinois beginning in mid-2027.
The deal, struck as existing state subsidies near expiration, is expected to preserve the plant’s operations, add 30 megawatts of clean energy capacity, sustain about 1,100 jobs, and generate approximately $13.5 million annually in tax revenue.
The agreement reflects a growing industry shift toward nuclear power as tech companies confront soaring electricity demands fueled by artificial intelligence and data center growth. In addition to Meta, companies such as Microsoft, Google and Amazon are increasingly seeking carbon-free sources to meet energy needs.
“Securing clean, reliable energy is necessary to continue advancing our AI ambitions,” said Urvi Parekh, Meta’s global head of renewable energy.
Despite rising corporate interest, energy experts caution that scaling nuclear power in the U.S. faces significant obstacles, including regulatory delays, aging infrastructure and limited domestic uranium production.
Meanwhile, renewable sources like solar and wind still make up a smaller share of energy supplied to data centers, raising concerns over whether the clean energy sector can keep pace with AI’s explosive growth.
