Tokyo, Japan (Enmaeya News) — Japanese scientists have developed a new type of plastic that dissolves in seawater within hours, offering a major breakthrough in the fight against ocean pollution.

Researchers from RIKEN and the University of Tokyo tested the material in a lab near Tokyo. A small piece of the plastic fully disappeared in about an hour when stirred in saltwater. It breaks down into safe components that are eaten by natural bacteria, leaving no microplastics behind.

The plastic is strong like regular plastic but dissolves completely in marine environments and even in soil, where it takes around 200 hours. It’s also non-toxic, non-flammable, and gives off no CO₂ when it breaks down.

“This material is already drawing attention from the packaging industry,” said lead scientist Takuzo Aida. He added that the team is now working on practical coatings so the plastic can be used in everyday products.

As plastic pollution in oceans is expected to triple by 2040, this innovation could be a vital tool. Its ability to dissolve quickly without leaving a trace offers new hope in tackling one of today’s most serious environmental problems.
