San Diego, United States (Enmaeya News) — Thousands of mapping and data professionals are gathering in San Diego this week for the 2025 Esri User Conference, the world’s largest event focused on geographic information systems (GIS).
The conference runs from July 14 to 18 at the San Diego Convention Center, hosted by Esri, a global leader in location intelligence software. This year’s theme, “GIS: Integrating Everything, Everywhere,” highlights how spatial data is helping industries and governments make smarter decisions.
On opening day, Esri founder Jack Dangermond welcomed thousands of attendees during the Plenary Session, introducing new innovations in real-time data analysis and AI-powered mapping. Success stories from around the world showcased how GIS is transforming everything from disaster response to environmental protection.
The Map Gallery opened with a special celebration marking the 40th edition of the iconic “Esri Map Book,” accompanied by an author signing and interactive map exhibits. Orientation sessions were also held for in-person and virtual participants, helping them navigate the week-long schedule using the Esri Events app.
Before the main conference officially opened, several pre-conference summits were held over the weekend. These included the Education Summit and the Safety and Security Summit, which focused on how GIS is being used in classrooms, disaster response, and emergency planning.
While these required separate registration, attendees were also granted early access to parts of the main conference.
Throughout the week, attendees are participating in specialized summits tailored to different fields and industries. These sessions, which require advanced registration, include topics such as artificial intelligence in GIS, the use of spatial analytics in urban planning, and the growing role of satellite imagery in environmental monitoring.
Other summits address the needs of GIS managers, software developers, scientists, and Indigenous communities working to strengthen sovereignty through digital mapping.
Some events during the conference are invitation-only, such as the Senior Executive Summit and the Defense and Intelligence Summit. These closed-door sessions bring together decision-makers from the public and private sectors to discuss how GIS technology is shaping policy, national security, and global strategy.
The main conference features more than 700 sessions, including technical workshops, live demonstrations, and user presentations. Esri is showcasing the latest updates to its ArcGIS platform, with a focus on real-time data analysis, AI-powered mapping, and low-code development tools.
Exhibitors from across the industry are also unveiling new GIS-related products, including address verification and data cleansing tools designed to work directly within Esri’s software ecosystem.
Now in its 45th year, the Esri User Conference draws professionals from over 100 countries. Attendees include urban planners, climate scientists, educators, military analysts, and software engineers—all using GIS to solve complex challenges in their fields. The event continues to serve as a global hub for innovation, education, and collaboration around location-based technology.
