Damascus, Syria (Enmaeya News) — Syria and Turkey have inaugurated a new regional natural gas pipeline extending from Azerbaijan through Turkey to Syria, marking an important development in the region’s energy sector.

The project involves active participation from Qatar and Azerbaijan and was launched in a ceremony attended by senior officials, including Syrian Energy Minister Mohammad Al-Bishr, Turkish Energy Minister Alper Arslan Bayraktar, Azerbaijan’s Economy Minister Mikail Jabbarov, and representatives from the Qatar Development Fund.

The pipeline is expected to deliver up to 6 million cubic meters of natural gas daily. The initial phase will provide 3.4 million cubic meters per day from Azerbaijan, passing through Turkey to power plants in Aleppo. This supply is part of Qatar’s assistance, highlighting Doha’s supportive role in Syria’s reconstruction.

Officials describe the pipeline as a crucial step toward reintegrating Syria into the regional energy network, improving energy security, and supporting the rebuilding of essential infrastructure.

Minister Al-Bishr views the project as a fresh start for Syria’s energy sector, emphasizing its potential to revive electricity production and stimulate economic growth.

Energy economist Nihad Ismail notes that after 14 years of conflict, Syria is entering a new phase focused on restoring vital services like electricity and water, which are essential for returning to normal life. He also points out Qatar’s ongoing commitment to supporting Syria’s electricity sector, as demonstrated by the recent launch of a second phase of aid.

The project carries strategic significance as Syria reenters the regional energy landscape and seeks to build sustainable economic partnerships. It may also attract investments in key sectors such as agriculture, industry, and tourism, all of which rely heavily on dependable electricity.

Dr. Wafaa Ali, an expert in economics and energy, highlights that the pipeline represents a strategic shift in Middle Eastern energy dynamics and offers Syria the chance to fill a crucial regional energy gap. She explains that increased gas supplies are expected to improve electricity availability, facilitate the safe return of displaced Syrians, and support reconstruction efforts.

Both officials and experts agree that the pipeline will notably increase electricity service hours in Syria, representing a significant improvement compared to recent years.
