Beirut, Lebanon (Enmaeya News) — Lebanon’s Cabinet has approved a comprehensive action plan led by the Ministry of Environment to improve waste management and wastewater treatment systems nationwide, officials said.
The session, announced by Information Minister Paul Morcos, focused on two critical areas:
Wastewater Treatment Revitalization
The Cabinet reviewed a presentation by the Minister of Energy and Water outlining major institutional, operational and financial challenges facing regional water establishments responsible for sewage management. The approved plan aims to strengthen these institutions, complete ongoing infrastructure rehabilitation, and secure funding to finish unfinished treatment projects.
Streamlining Solid Waste Governance
Acknowledging the urgency of the issue, the Cabinet endorsed the Environment Ministry’s strategy to finalize the establishment of a National Solid Waste Management Authority. The government also supported updating the national waste strategy, introducing a cost-recovery framework for waste services, and reinstating a 2023 legislative bill submitted to Parliament.
Officials emphasized the need for coordinated donor funding to support these initiatives and said discussions will continue in future Cabinet sessions.
By approving action plans targeting both waste disposal and water sanitation, Lebanon is taking steps to address long-standing environmental challenges. The reforms signal a renewed political focus on environmental stewardship, resource efficiency, and national resilience.
