Las Vegas, United States (Enmaeya News) — Geoffrey Hinton, often called the “godfather” of artificial intelligence, warned that current restrictions on AI will not protect humans from a potential uprising, according to a report by TechSpot.

“This won’t work. They will be much smarter than us. They will have every way to bypass the restrictions we impose,” Hinton said at an AI conference in Las Vegas. He stressed the need to explore alternative methods to prevent AI from turning against humans before it reaches general intelligence.

Hinton suggested embedding a complex set of emotions in advanced AI robots—what he calls maternal instincts. These instincts, he said, would prevent future robots from harming humans even if they surpass human-level intelligence.

In a previous interview with CNN, Hinton cited the example of a child controlling a mother through her maternal instincts as a model for AI. He said companies should focus on building these safeguards rather than making AI smarter.

Yan LeCun, another AI pioneer and chief AI scientist at Meta, echoed Hinton’s views in a LinkedIn post. LeCun said the future of AI lies in systems designed to follow human instructions while respecting built-in safeguards, a concept he calls “goal-directed AI.”

LeCun added that safeguards should ensure complete obedience to human commands and empathy to prevent AI from providing misleading advice or information that could harm humans.
