Beirut, Lebanon (Enmaeya News) — As part of efforts to improve waste management in Akkar, Minister of Environment Dr. Tamara Elzein met with representatives from the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), the World Bank, and SES–EPEM to review a proposed solid waste management plan for the region.
The discussions focused on ensuring the plan aligns with environmental standards and safeguards the health and well-being of local communities. Elzein emphasized the importance of consulting Akkar’s municipalities before proceeding, noting that local engagement is essential for the plan’s success and long-term sustainability.
During the meeting, officials reviewed three scenarios, all centered on sorting, recycling, and final landfilling, to determine the most environmentally sound and health-conscious approach for the governorate. The proposals aim to provide a long-term, integrated solution to Akkar’s ongoing waste management challenges.
The initiative represents a major step toward creating a comprehensive system that balances technical feasibility with community needs, advancing sustainable waste practices in one of Lebanon’s most underserved regions.
