Beirut, Lebanon (Enmaeya News) — Lebanon’s Ministry of Agriculture has launched a national project to plant trees along roadways across the country, aiming to enhance green spaces, protect biodiversity, and improve city and village landscapes.

The Ministry is inviting municipalities and municipal unions to participate by submitting applications that meet specified conditions and criteria.

Minister of Agriculture Nizar Hani stressed that roadside tree planting is a shared national responsibility. He described it as an investment in the environment, public health, and resilience against climate change, urging municipalities to take a leading role in the initiative.

Applications are open from the date of the announcement until September 20, 2025, and can be submitted through the Rural Development Departments at the Ministry’s regional offices using the dedicated application form.

The Ministry outlined requirements for planting along roads:

  • Roads must be municipal or public property.

  • Soil must support sustainable tree growth at a safe distance from asphalt or pavement (1.5–2 meters).

  • Soil depth must be at least 50 cm.

  • A permanent water source must be available for irrigation during the maintenance period.

  • The site must be ready for planting without additional infrastructure work.

The implementation process includes submitting applications with required documents, on-site inspections by the Rural Development Department or forestry centers, preparation of technical reports assessing site suitability, and final approval by the Ministry’s Directorate of Rural Development and Natural Resources.

The Ministry emphasized that the project is a practical step toward improving Lebanon’s environment, mitigating climate change effects, and encouraging municipalities to actively participate in sustainable development.
