Tripoli, Lebanon (Enmaeya News) — The International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), in collaboration with the Government of Lebanon, have launched the Tripoli Peace Initiative: Safeguarding Stability in Lebanon.
The two-year programme, funded by the UN Secretary-General’s Peacebuilding Fund (PBF), aims to strengthen social stability, community engagement, and empower youth and women in Tripoli, one of Lebanon’s most vulnerable yet dynamic cities.
Youth are at the heart of the initiative. UNDP will promote youth participation in peacebuilding, social stability, and inclusive local development, while UNICEF will focus on youth engagement, skills development, and empowerment.
IOM will lead efforts to foster community cohesion and build connections with the Lebanese diaspora.
The Government of Lebanon, through key ministries, is actively involved in the programme to ensure sustainability and long-term impact.
The Municipality of Tripoli hosted a strategic meeting on July 30 with IOM, UNDP, and UNICEF to discuss next steps. Mayor Abdulhamid Karimeh described the initiative as the first tangible project under the new municipal board and pledged full support. Bilal Hussein, Head of the Development and International Relations Committee, highlighted the role of NGOs in guiding implementation.
The programme also seeks to engage Lebanon’s diaspora through financial contributions, in-kind support, and knowledge exchange.
