Beirut, Lebanon (Enmaeya News) — Human activities are putting the world’s oceans under unprecedented stress, threatening marine life, coastal communities, and global climate stability. A newly published analysis by National Geographic (August 2025) highlights the key threats and potential solutions to protect ocean health.
Oceans cover 70 percent of Earth’s surface and provide food, shelter, and about half of the oxygen we breathe. They also regulate climate and capture carbon dioxide. Yet global warming, pollution, overfishing, invasive species, and oil spills are rapidly altering ocean chemistry and ecosystems.
Each year, eight million tons of plastic enter the seas, harming over 2,000 species of wildlife. Industrial waste, pesticides, and airborne pollutants further disrupt marine habitats, while military sonar and destructive fishing practices threaten whales, fish, and seabirds.
Experts advocate solutions including the creation of more Marine Protected Areas, reducing destructive fishing, supporting local conservation efforts, limiting pollution, and fostering sustainable fishing practices. Public awareness and individual actions, from responsible seafood choices to reducing single-use plastics, are also crucial.
Scientists warn that only coordinated global efforts can turn the tide, safeguarding oceans for both humans and marine life.
