Starting October 12, 2025, the European Union will launch the Entry/Exit System (EES), a new digital border control system for non-EU travellers. The system replaces traditional passport stamping with biometric checks and electronic records.
Under EES, first-time visitors will provide fingerprints and a facial image. For children under 12, only a facial image will be required. Travel details, including passport information, entry and exit points, and length of stay, will be stored electronically.
The system will also track overstays automatically, making manual stamps and old methods of monitoring visas unnecessary. Implementation will begin at airports, seaports, and land borders and is expected to be completed by April 2026.
For Indian travellers, who need Schengen visas, the changes are significant. First-time entries may take longer due to biometric registration, but future visits will be faster, requiring only verification. Biometric passports may help speed processing at automated gates.
EU officials say the system will improve security, reduce identity fraud, and make travel more efficient over time. Passengers at major hubs like Paris, Frankfurt, and Amsterdam may experience longer queues during the rollout.
