OpenAI has published its first major study on how people are using ChatGPT, giving a detailed look at the world’s most popular AI tool.
The 62-page report analyzes chat records from more than 1.5 million users between May 2024 and June 2025. The study was not peer-reviewed, but OpenAI said it used its own AI systems to process the data while protecting user privacy.
The findings show that women now make up a slim majority of ChatGPT users, accounting for about 52%. In 2023, when the model was first launched, women represented only 20% of the user base.
Young people also dominate usage. Nearly half of ChatGPT conversations come from users aged 18 to 25, according to the report.
Most interactions are not work-related. Instead, people ask for everyday advice, explanations of general knowledge, or help with writing. The study shows that:
28.3% of requests were for practical help, such as fixing a car or solving a household problem.
28.1% were writing tasks, including letters and essays.
21.3% were searches for information.
Only 4.2% involved computer coding.
Editing and revising text was one of the most common activities, with more than 38% of users asking ChatGPT to review or critique writing. Translation and summarization were also frequent requests.
A small share of users turned to ChatGPT for emotional support, but the report said this number was too small to be significant.
OpenAI also noted growing use in developing countries, though it did not publish country-specific data.
The findings highlight a major shift in how people search for information. Increasingly, users are turning to ChatGPT instead of Google. Analysts say this could threaten Google’s long-held dominance of online search and push major tech companies to expand their own AI tools.
