The 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is taking place in New York from September 9 to 29, 2025, amid escalating global crises and shifting international alliances.World leaders gathered to address pressing issues, including the recognition of Palestinian statehood, the advancement of women's rights, and the reform of UN institutions.
Recognition of Palestinian Statehood
A significant development occurred when French President Emmanuel Macron announced France's official recognition of Palestinian statehood during a high-level meeting at the UNGA. This move was met with applause from the assembly and added France to the growing list of nations recognizing Palestinian statehood.
Other countries, including the UK, Canada, Australia, and several European nations, have also extended recognition, bringing the total number of UN members recognizing Palestine to approximately three-quarters. However, countries like Germany, Italy, and Japan participated in the meeting without extending such recognition.
Despite growing international support, Israel continues to oppose Palestinian statehood and has threatened to annex parts of the West Bank. UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized that statehood is a right, not a reward. With peace talks stalled for more than a decade, the international community insists that a two-state solution remains the only viable path to lasting peace.
Advancements in Women's Rights
The 30th anniversary of the 1995 Beijing World Conference on Women showed that progress on women’s rights has been slow and uneven. UN Secretary-General António Guterres criticized the rise of misogyny and said new technologies are making gender inequality worse through male-dominated industries, biased data, and unfair algorithms.
Leaders also worried about laws rolling back women’s rights, growing anti-gender messages, and the lack of women in top UN positions. Shocking statistics were shared: one in three women worldwide will face sexual violence, and almost 10% live in extreme poverty.
Wars and climate change affect women the most, with over 676 million living near dangerous conflict areas. Despite these challenges, many leaders promised to keep working toward the goals of the Beijing Declaration.
Calls for UN Reform
As the United Nations approaches its 80th anniversary, questions about its future are growing. Once seen as a symbol of hope after World War II, the UN now faces challenges in responding to global crises such as the wars in Ukraine, Gaza, and Sudan.
