OpenAI is currently working to build an internal team to help display ads within ChatGPT, aiming to capitalize on its user base of 700 million monthly active users, according to a report by Sources.

The new team will operate directly under Vidji Simo, who recently joined the company as Chief Applications Officer. Simo is actively interviewing candidates for the new role.

The responsibilities of the new Head of Advertising position that Simo is looking to fill include managing the company’s overall efforts to generate revenue and profit, from displaying ads within its products to direct subscription services.

The report notes that Simo previously served as CEO of the popular app Instacart and was formerly Head of App at Facebook. She leverages her experience at Facebook to collect candidate data and conduct interviews.

This move is neither surprising nor unexpected. The company recently posted a job aimed at integrating advertising platforms with its own platform to facilitate direct ad display within ChatGPT. OpenAI has been exploring this strategy since 2024.

Previously, Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT, told The Verge that displaying ads within ChatGPT is not off the table, but emphasized that the company intends to do it elegantly and without annoying users.

Currently, OpenAI generates $12.7 billion in annual revenue, relying solely on subscriptions and its various enterprise services.

Advertising within ChatGPT could significantly increase revenue and help cover the platform’s high costs, given its more than 700 million monthly active users.
