The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), a group that brings renewable energy to developing countries, plans to invest $7.5 billion over the next five years. The alliance is looking for more charitable partners as government aid from wealthy nations declines.
Founded by the IKEA Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, and the Bezos Earth Fund, GEAPP has helped over 30 countries improve electricity grids, set up battery storage, and create green jobs. Its partners include Britain, Denmark, the World Bank, and private companies like GE Vernova.
Chief Executive Woochong Um said the alliance is preparing for the next global climate conference in Brazil this November and is forming new partnerships. Plans include an Energy and Opportunity Coalition to bring green energy to areas like agriculture and health.
GEAPP is also expanding its work on “Grids of the Future”, making power systems in developing countries ready for renewable energy, digitally smart, and financially sustainable. Battery storage projects are underway in over 20 countries, including India’s first utility-scale standalone system. In Jaipur, a digital map of 6.5 million utility assets helps spot problems before outages, saving over $50 million a year.
During its first five years, GEAPP raised $7.8 billion, expected to give energy access to nearly 240 million people and reduce 952 million tons of carbon emissions. For 2026–2030, the alliance plans to raise at least $500 million in philanthropic funding and leverage it about 15 times to reach its $7.5 billion target.
