Agriculture Minister Nizar Hani announced the formation of the Higher Agricultural Council at the Ministry of Agriculture under Resolution No. 520/1, issued in line with existing laws and regulations.
The Ministry of Agriculture said the council is the first of its kind, bringing together representatives from public administration, academia, experts and the private sector to provide a national platform for agricultural policy.
The council is chaired by Hani, with Agriculture Director General Louis Lahoud as vice president. Other members include Cooperatives Director General Gloria Abu Zaid, Lebanese University Agriculture Dean Nadine Nasif, Engineer Khair Al-Jarrah, Dr. Lara Wakim, Dr. Shadi Hamadeh, and Mohammad Al-Husseini. The head of the Department of Statistics and Economic Studies at the ministry will serve as rapporteur.
Under Article Eight of Legislative Decree No. 97, dated Sept. 16, 1983, the council is tasked with setting agricultural priorities, reviewing policies and plans, supporting production sustainability, and assisting farmers in facing challenges.
Minister Hani said the council represents “a foundational milestone in the process of modernizing the agricultural sector in Lebanon, as we are, for the first time, establishing an institutional framework that guarantees the participation of experts, academics, and the private sector in shaping national strategies.”
He added, “The Higher Agricultural Council will be a key partner for the ministry in achieving its goals, foremost among them strengthening food security, protecting farmers, and advancing sustainable agriculture as a driver of economic and social growth.”
