Global tourism linked to nature reserves is growing, with governments and international organizations investing in eco-tourism infrastructure to balance economic growth and environmental protection, according to recent reports.
The World Bank estimates that protected areas attract roughly 8 billion visits annually, generating close to $600 billion in spending worldwide. The World Travel & Tourism Council says the sector contributed 9.1% to global GDP in 2023, supporting more than 330 million jobs.
Investments in nature reserves are seen as a key driver of sustainable tourism, helping countries diversify their economies while preserving ecosystems.
In Lebanon, the travel and tourism sector contributed 19.8% of GDP in 2024, a sharp increase from 8.4% in 2023, according to the WTTC. The sector supported 315,000 jobs, about 19.6% of total employment.
Lebanon has begun directing investments into its natural reserves. A United Nations Development Programme project, in coordination with the Ministry of Environment and other partners, has upgraded facilities in eight nature reserves to improve accessibility for persons with disabilities. The initiative aims to expand eco-tourism, protect biodiversity, and enhance inclusivity in tourism development.
Natural heritage remains central to Lebanon’s tourism appeal. The country features 225 kilometers of Mediterranean coastline, ski resorts, mountain and forest landscapes, and extensive hiking trails that form the backbone of the sector.
