AKKAR (Enmaeya News) — October 1, 2025
A community awareness campaign on wastewater management was launched in Akkar, Lebanon, to reduce pollution in irrigation water and improve local livelihoods.
The initiative was organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in partnership with LRC–LebRelief, with funding from Norway.
The campaign engaged municipalities, local authorities, and residents. It highlighted the risks of untreated wastewater and promoted sustainable treatment methods such as Anaerobic Baffled Reactors (ABR) and constructed wetlands.
Workshops, focus groups, and outreach meetings gave participants practical guidance on wastewater handling, health risks, and environmental impacts.
Communities also visited pilot sites using rootzone technologies to see nature-based solutions in practice.
Six municipalities received support to draft wastewater management roadmaps. These roadmaps outlined clear steps for adopting improved treatment systems and ensuring local oversight.
In total, 145 people took part in the campaign, including 88 women — showing strong female participation in water and sanitation efforts.
Organizers said the initiative strengthened local knowledge, encouraged dialogue, and equipped stakeholders to maintain sustainable wastewater solutions in the region.
