KORNAYEL (Enmaeya News) — October 2, 2025

Lebanon’s first Natural Park, Hima Kornayel, was officially launched in Kornayel under the patronage of the Minister of Environment Dr. Tamara Elzein and in the presence of the Swiss Ambassador H.E. Dr. Marion Weichelt.

The initiative was organized by the Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) in partnership with the Municipality of Kornayel and funded by Switzerland. It revives Lebanon’s traditional Hima system while supporting the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the 2030 SDGs.

The launch engaged local authorities, community members, and environmental experts. Participants discussed community-based conservation, climate resilience, and the sustainable management of green spaces. SPNL presented scientific mapping and remote sensing tools for evidence-based conservation.

The event featured speeches by key stakeholders: Assad Serhal (SPNL), Mayor Faisal Al-Aawar, Amine Al Halabi (AFDC), Ambassador Marion Weichelt, and Minister Dr. Tamara Elzein, highlighting the Hima’s role as a community trust and model for governance and climate action.

The day concluded with a symbolic release of migratory birds and vultures, a community breakfast, and celebrations of Lebanon’s natural heritage.

Organizers said the launch strengthens local engagement, promotes nature conservation, and demonstrates how tradition, science, and community collaboration can drive sustainable development in Lebanon.
