Researchers have discovered that waxworm caterpillars (Galleria mellonella) can degrade polyethylene (PE) plastic, commonly used in agricultural mulch films. The insects chew through the plastic while their gut microbes and enzymes help break it down, offering a nature-based solution to persistent plastic waste.

The recent study, published in Science of the Total Environment, highlights the caterpillars’ ability to partially digest and metabolize the plastic. While a plastic-only diet is lethal for the larvae, researchers are investigating supplements to keep them alive while they process plastic efficiently.

Agricultural PE films are widely used but difficult to dispose of, posing environmental challenges. Using waxworms could provide a sustainable alternative for managing farm plastic waste, reducing pollution and supporting eco-friendly farming practices.

Experts say the research underscores the potential of biological solutions for tackling human-made waste, showing that sometimes nature already has the answers.
