LEBANON (Enmaeya News) - October 3, 2025
The Jdeideh landfill, serving municipalities in Keserwan, Metn, and parts of Beirut, has reached full capacity, raising concerns over a renewed garbage crisis in Lebanon.
Authorities have extended its operation until October 6, temporarily delaying the closure originally scheduled for September 30.
Opened in 2016 to replace the Naameh site, the landfill was meant to operate for five years alongside the Costa Brava site in Choueifat, which handles waste from South Mount Lebanon and other parts of Beirut.
However, poor waste management practices have led to premature saturation, with the Jdeideh site now holding approximately three million tons of waste.
Environmental advocates warn that the extension is only a temporary measure and stress the need for sustainable solutions.
Solutions include municipal waste sorting, securing donor support, and developing comprehensive waste management systems.
Without an alternative site ready, the closure of the Jdeideh landfill could trigger a serious waste management crisis in the serviced region.
Authorities and environmental organizations are under pressure to implement long-term reforms to prevent recurring landfill saturation.
