UNOPS, the United Nations Office for Project Services, in partnership with the Government of Germany through KfW, is advancing efforts to rebuild and modernize Lebanon’s urban infrastructure, helping cities recover from the 2020 Beirut port explosion while laying the foundation for a more resilient future.

Backed by more than €23 million in German funding, the initiative focuses on restoring public services and creating sustainable, inclusive spaces across Beirut and Bourj Hammoud.

Projects include the rehabilitation of roads, tunnels, and public gardens, as well as the installation of solar energy systems and LED lighting to enhance safety, mobility, and energy efficiency.

So far, more than 50 streets have been upgraded, 790 LED lights installed, and eight public green spaces are being transformed, adding 75,000 square meters of accessible areas for residents.

UNOPS says the effort goes beyond reconstruction to “build back better,” strengthening community resilience and supporting Lebanon’s path toward long-term sustainability.
