OpenAI, the artificial intelligence company behind ChatGPT, has reached a valuation of $500 billion following a recent share sale, according to a report by Reuters.

This makes it the most valuable private company both in the world and in the AI sector.

The deal involved selling shares for approximately $6.6 billion for investors, like Thrive Capital, SoftBank, and Dragoneer Investment Group. The high price shows that investors are confident in OpenAI’s future.

OpenAI has become one of the biggest names in artificial intelligence. Its most popular product, ChatGPT, is used by millions of people around the world.

Another reason for OpenAI’s success is its strong partnership with Microsoft, which has invested billions in the company.

Microsoft also uses OpenAI’s technology in some of its products, like Bing and Microsoft 365.

The company generated approximately $4.3 billion in revenue during the first half of 2025, which is a 16% increase over its total revenue for all of 2024.

OpenAI is also working on large projects, including building more powerful computers and AI systems that could one day match or even go beyond human intelligence.

The CEO of OpenAI Sam Altman wrote a blog post in June saying that he believes humanity is “close” to creating superintelligence, or AI that surpasses human capabilities.

He also predicts this breakthrough will significantly shape the 2030s, particularly by lowering AI costs as robots take over building its infrastructure.
