BEIRUT (Enmaeya News) - October 8, 2025
A study is in progress to determine the location, size, and economic feasibility of rebuilding the destroyed silos in Beirut Port, Minister of Economy and Trade Amir Basat announced.
According to Basat, the first draft of the study is expected within two weeks. After its completion, the ministry will seek funding to begin reconstruction. Discussions with Kuwait are ongoing to secure funding.
The plan calls for the new silos to be built at a different site than the old ones and reconstruction is expected to launch in early 2026.
The original grain silos were heavily damaged in the Beirut Port explosion on August 4, 2020, which killed over 200 people and caused widespread destruction.
While the first new silos will be in Beirut, sources told Addiyar that the long-term vision includes spreading silo facilities to other regions such as Tripoli and the Beqaa Valley.
Industry experts emphasize that new silos should be modern, possibly utilizing artificial intelligence, with capacity to store more than a year’s supply of wheat.
The ministries of Economy and Transport will oversee the project, while the Ministry of Agriculture plans to build specialized silos for locally grown “soft wheat” using models from Jordan.
The new silos will help keep wheat reserves safe, making it easier for the country to handle changes in supply and avoid problems in the future.
