LEBANON (Enmaeya News) - October 10, 2025
The Lebanese Ministry of Public Works and Transport has announced a new plan to reduce flooding on roads during the rainy season, according to Voice of Lebanon.
The plan involves cooperation between the government, municipalities, and citizens.
Public Works Minister Fayez Rassamni said in a radio and TV interview that the ministry had started preparing for this plan months ago.
He explained that heavy rain often causes flooding due to blocked drains, poor maintenance, and outdated infrastructure.
He also pointed to random construction and garbage thrown into rivers and streets as major reasons for the problem.
Rassamni stressed that his ministry cannot handle the issue alone. “Everyone has a role, including municipalities, contractors, and citizens,” he said.
He added that the Ministry of Interior had already asked municipalities to clean drains and rivers before winter begins.
The Public Works Ministry has also introduced new rules for contractors to make sure drainage systems are built and maintained properly.
Rassamni said his team would work closely with the Council for Development and Reconstruction to upgrade the main drainage networks next year.
Under the new plan, municipalities will be required to clear blocked drains and water channels regularly, while the ministry will focus on repairing and expanding main infrastructure.
Citizens will also be expected to avoid throwing trash into streets and waterways.
Flooding has long been a problem in Lebanon, with many roads turning into rivers during the first rain each year. Rassamni promised that this time, things would be different.
“We are enforcing stronger rules and will monitor the work closely,” he said on Voice of Lebanon.
The real test will come when the next major rain hits, to show whether the new coordination between ministries, municipalities, and citizens can finally prevent Lebanon’s streets from flooding again.
