U.S. federal regulators have opened a wide investigation into Tesla’s “Full Self-Driving” (FSD) system after dozens of reported crashes, fires, and traffic violations, according to the Associated Press.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is reviewing incidents involving nearly 2.9 million Tesla vehicles equipped with the FSD software.
The agency said it has documented 58 cases in which Teslas in FSD mode allegedly violated traffic laws, such as running red lights, driving into oncoming traffic, or making unsafe lane changes.
These violations have led to 14 crashes and 23 injuries, some caused by fires following crashes.
Tesla maintains that drivers using FSD must stay alert and intervene if needed. However, many drivers involved in these events say their vehicles behaved unexpectedly, without warning.
Analysts have long questioned whether Tesla’s marketing of FSD misleads drivers into overestimating its capabilities.
Some argue that the system risks being treated as fully autonomous, despite being classified as Level 2 driver assistance, meaning a human must continuously supervise the vehicle.
The ongoing investigations now place added pressure on the company to demonstrate that its software is safe and reliable.
