LEBANON (Enmaeya News) - October 13, 2025
The Lebanese Cabinet has decided to create a special committee to study how to improve and manage the country’s mobile network sector, according to L'Orient Today.
The move comes as Lebanon’s two main mobile operators, Alfa and Touch, face growing problems with outdated systems, weak coverage, and limited investment.
The new committee will explore several options, including bringing back private management companies or partially privatizing the sector.
Both options are being considered as possible ways to modernize the networks and attract international investment.
Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri will lead the committee, which also includes the ministers of Telecommunications, Technology and Artificial Intelligence, Finance, Energy and Water, and Labor. Other ministers may join later, according to an official decision.
Since 2020, Alfa and Touch have been under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Telecommunications, after their previous management contracts with Orascom and Zain expired during the economic crisis.
Experts say Lebanon’s telecom sector has not kept up with global developments. The country still lacks 5G service and struggles with frequent network outages.
The committee will prepare detailed recommendations for the government on how to restructure the sector, strengthen regulation, and improve services.
Officials say the goal is to find a sustainable model that ensures reliable communication, encourages investment, and supports the country’s digital development.
The report is expected to be submitted to the Cabinet in the coming months, potentially shaping the future of Lebanon’s telecom industry.
