Lebanon’s Minister of Industry, Joe Issa Al-Khoury, underscored the importance of proper waste management as a critical step toward preserving public health and environmental safety, according to MTV.
Addressing an audience during the closing ceremony of a project at the American University of Beirut (AUB), Al-Khoury described the management of construction and demolition waste as an entry point for strengthening health protections.
The event, titled “Beyond Recycling: Circular Economy and Environmental Sustainability in Lebanon’s Reform Agenda,” was held under the patronage of the Nature Conservation Center at AUB, with financial backing from the European Union and Transparency International.
The project seeks to tackle mounting challenges tied to Lebanon’s waste overload, promote circular economy practices, and integrate sustainable waste-management policies into national reform plans.
Representatives from the EU mission reaffirmed their commitment to Lebanon’s environmental and economic advancement, noting that waste management is crucial to safeguarding population health and sustainable development.
Project leaders and university officials stressed that the formal conclusion of this pilot phase should mark the beginning of an extended reform journey.
Al-Khoury’s statements reflect growing urgency in Lebanon to link infrastructure projects with health objectives, particularly as waste accumulation increasingly strains public systems and environmental standards.
