LEBANON (Enmaeye News) - October 15, 2025
Lebanon’s Ministry of Environment has secured a critical vote on an urgent motion at the 2025 IUCN World Conservation Congress, aiming to gather international support for the recovery of ecosystems devastated by the 2023-2024 war.
Addressing the assembly in Abu Dhabi, the Lebanese delegation presented Motion 148, titled “Supporting the Recovery and Restoration of War-Impacted Ecosystems.”
The motion’s progression was a significant diplomatic effort after it was rejected twice before being accepted on appeal with the backing of over 18 members, including strong support from Hungary and Kenya.
The proposal seeks to establish a framework for joint fundraising of USD 12 million. These funds are designated for the comprehensive rehabilitation of Lebanon’s coasts, biodiversity, soil, and forests, which suffered extensive damage during the recent conflict.
Ministry officials clarified that the motion does not impose a financial obligation on member states. Instead, its passage would signify international solidarity and create a pathway to mobilize partners and resources essential for Lebanon's environmental restoration.
The vote, which is scheduled to take place soon, represents a crucial step in addressing the severe environmental consequences of the war.
A successful outcome would set a vital precedent for global cooperation in post-conflict ecological recovery and support Lebanon's long-term environmental and public health stability.
