BEIRUT (Enmaeya News) - October 16, 2025
Fifty-six faculty members from the American University of Beirut (AUB) have been recognized this year among the world’s top 2% most-cited scientists, according to the National News Agency.
The ranking, which draws on the 2025 Elsevier’s Scopus database and metrics developed at Stanford University, evaluates researchers across 22 major fields and 174 subfields.
It considers factors such as the h-index, co-authorship-adjusted hm-index, and the number of citations in key authorship positions.
At AUB, 46 faculty were recognized for their career-long impact, while 37 were featured in the “single-year impact” list, demonstrating both sustained scholarly influence and recent research activity.
The 56 are spread across 25 departments within six faculties, including biology, business, chemistry, engineering, health sciences, medicine, and nutrition and food sciences.
AUB’s Vice Provost for Research, Dr. Elie Akl, said that this shows how the university community, including students and staff, is “producing high-quality, interdisciplinary, and collaborative research that is both locally impactful and globally relevant.”
President Fadlo Khuri noted that several scholars from the humanities, while not fully captured by these citation metrics, also maintain global influence through books and other outputs.
The university also acknowledged visiting scholars Lina Kurdahi Badr and Hassan Noura, as well as the late professors Anis Baraka and Ibrahim Salti, who are among the named scientists.
AUB says that this year, eight faculty members were included in the career-long citation list for the first time, reinforcing its growing research profile.
