Importers in Lebanon are warning that repeated breakdowns in the Port of Beirut’s computer systems are causing long delays in clearing goods, according to L'Orient Today.
The Port of Beirut’s management committee (GEPB) confirmed that the issue came from the Najm system and said a plan is underway to update the CAMA software.
However, this process will take several months to complete. Some port sources admitted that they are unsure whether Najm will continue to function properly in the future.
Hani Bohsali, head of the Food Importers Syndicate, said the government should stop using short-term fixes and start a real digital upgrade using modern technology.
He also said the current system is too old and unreliable, leading to frequent delays and confusion.
Finance Minister Yassine Jaber announced that a new digital pre-declaration system is being prepared to make customs procedures faster and more transparent.
The government is also improving scanning equipment at both Beirut and Tripoli ports, though stricter anti-smuggling checks have recently slowed operations.
These repeated computer failures are adding pressure to Lebanon’s fragile trade system.
Since the Port of Beirut handles most of the country’s imports, any technical problem quickly affects the flow of goods, increasing costs and delays for businesses already struggling with the country’s economic crisis.
