U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to sharply raise tariffs on Chinese goods to 155% if Washington and Beijing fail to reach a new trade deal by November 1.
Speaking at the White House alongside Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Trump said China has already been “paying heavily” under current tariffs but warned that new measures could come soon if progress stalls.
He said the U.S. wants a deal that is “fair and good for both countries,” but made clear that time is running out.
The proposed tariff hike would mark one of the largest trade penalties ever imposed by the U.S. on China, adding pressure on Beijing to return to the negotiating table.
Trump said he remains open to talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and expects to meet him soon, possibly during his upcoming visit to South Korea.
Chinese officials criticized Trump’s remarks, calling them unhelpful and warning that such threats risk worsening global economic tensions.
In recent months, China has introduced its own restrictions on exports of key materials such as rare earth minerals, arguing it is protecting national interests.
The warning comes as both sides prepare for another round of trade discussions.
Trump’s comments have added uncertainty to global markets amid unease about inflation and trade disruptions.
If no agreement is reached by the November deadline, economists warn the 155% tariffs could spark a new round of price increases worldwide and further strain U.S.-China relations.
