OpenAI revealed a new web browser named Atlas on Tuesday, positioning it as a direct competitor to Google’s dominance as a search engine.

The announcement came during a livestream in which CEO Sam Altman described the software as “an AI-powered web browser built around ChatGPT.”

A defining feature of Atlas is a chatbot-driven capability that autonomously performs web searches on the user’s behalf.

According to Altman, the agent “can roam the web, click, fetch results, you can observe or let it work in the background.”

While Atlas is available at no cost on macOS at launch, its agent function will be restricted to paying users of ChatGPT Plus or Pro.

OpenAI has also expressed ambitions to bring Atlas to Windows and mobile platforms but did not provide a timeline.

The introduction of Atlas intensifies pressure on Google, which has responded by integrating more AI capabilities into its existing search and browser products.

As AI tools increasingly compete with traditional search engines, Atlas represents OpenAI’s bet on shifting how people navigate the web.
