EUROPE (Enmaeya News) - October 23, 2025
The European Union approved a new round of sanctions against Russia, including its first-ever ban on imports of Russian liquefied natural gas.
According to The New York Times, the measures are part of the EU’s 19th sanctions package on Russia since 2022, and all remaining imports must stop by January 2027.
The package also targets Russian banks, cryptocurrency platforms, and companies in other countries accused of helping Moscow evade previous sanctions.
In addition, EU officials imposed new restrictions on the movement of Russian diplomats within the bloc.
Analysts told The New York Times that the move underscores growing unity among EU members to move away from Russian energy, though enforcement will be key. Russia has continued to redirect exports toward Asia, where demand remains strong.
The new sanctions also come amid renewed debate within the EU about long-term energy security and the cost of supporting Ukraine.
Despite concerns from some capital cities, the package passed after weeks of negotiation and is expected to take effect immediately.
