LEBANON (Enmaeya News) - October 24, 2025

In a statement marking United Nations Day, Hennis-Plasschaert said that Lebanon is going through a pivotal phase in its modern history that will shape its future, while major regional shifts and global powers continue to reshape the security and geopolitical landscape.

She stated: "In 1945, Lebanon was one of the countries that helped establish the United Nations in an effort to spare humanity further suffering after the devastation of World War II. Since then, a strong partnership has developed between the UN and Lebanon, which contributed to drafting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948”.

Hennis-Plasschaert added that the UN has accompanied the Lebanese people throughout various historical milestones, particularly during periods dominated by crises and unrest, through its political missions, peacekeeping operations, specialized agencies, funds, and development programs.

The Special Coordinator noted that this year’s United Nations Day comes amid a state of uncertainty in Lebanon.

She added: "After the escalation of hostilities in 2024, Lebanese authorities and armed forces made significant efforts to revive parts of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006) after years of stagnation. Nevertheless, southern Lebanon still suffers from widespread destruction, severe funding shortages, and continued uncertainty about the next phase”.

"This situation makes it difficult to ask the Lebanese people to continue exercising patience," she said.

Hennis-Plasschaert highlighted that history has left indelible marks, and the root causes of recurring crises have not been fully addressed.

She emphasized: "Despite this, collective efforts to support Lebanon’s challenging and courageous path continue. The road ahead remains long and requires persistent work internally and regionally, but Lebanon has clearly affirmed that there is no turning back from the path of progress it has chosen”.

She clarified that the Lebanese people have never been the cause of the political and economic failures experienced throughout the country’s history.

The Special Coordinator concluded: "The United Nations will continue to stand by the Lebanese state and its people, striving to achieve stability and prosperity for all".
