U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday he has ended all trade talks with Canada, accusing the country of using a “fraudulent” political ad that misused a speech by former President Ronald Reagan.

Trump announced the decision on his social media platform Truth Social, saying, “All trade negotiations with Canada are hereby terminated.” He said the ad, produced by Ontario’s provincial government, wrongly portrayed Reagan as criticizing tariffs, which Trump called misleading and disrespectful.

According to Reuters, the Reagan Presidential Foundation said the video used parts of Reagan’s 1987 speech “selectively” and without permission. It said it is reviewing possible legal action.

The dispute adds new strain to U.S.-Canada relations. Trump has already reimposed tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum and cars this year. Talks between the two countries had been aimed at resolving those trade tensions.

Trump also accused Canada of trying to influence the U.S. Supreme Court ahead of hearings on the legality of his global tariffs.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has not directly responded to Trump’s statement but said his government will protect Canadian industries and ensure fair trade conditions.

The United States, Canada and Mexico are set to review their 2020 North American trade deal next year. Trump’s announcement could complicate those talks and increase uncertainty for businesses on both sides of the border.
