French radio station RTL reported that the Louvre Museum has transferred some of its most valuable jewels to the Bank of France, after a broad daylight theft last week exposed weaknesses in the museum’s security system.
According to the station’s sources, the transfer of several precious items from the museum’s Apollo Gallery, which houses jewels dating back to the royal era, took place on Friday under special police escort.
The Bank of France, which holds the country’s gold reserves in a massive vault located 27 meters underground, lies just 500 meters away from the Louvre, on the right bank of the Seine River.
