Three sources told Reuters that Amazon plans to cut up to 30,000 jobs starting Tuesday as it seeks to reduce expenses and address overstaffing during the peak demand period of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although this number represents a small portion of Amazon’s total workforce of 1.55 million employees, it accounts for nearly 10% of its approximately 350,000 corporate staff.

This will be Amazon’s largest job reduction since it cut around 27,000 positions in late 2022.

Over the past two years, Amazon has carried out smaller job cuts across several departments, including devices, communications, and interactive programs.

Sources said that the job cuts starting this week may affect multiple departments within Amazon, including Human Resources, Devices, Services, and Operations.

They added that managers in these departments were asked to attend training on Monday on how to communicate with employees after notifications are sent via email starting Tuesday morning.

Amazon shares rose 1.2% to $226.80 during Monday trading. The company plans to announce its third-quarter earnings next Thursday.
