Interior and Municipalities Minister Ahmad Hajjar inspected the Beirut Municipality’s Finance Department on Wednesday after reports of an unauthorized payment, calling for a full audit and referring the case to judicial authorities.
Hajjar, accompanied by Mount Lebanon Governor Judge Mohammad Makkaoui, currently acting as Beirut’s governor, said a municipal employee made a payment “without any legal basis.”
He confirmed that the issue has been sent to the Court of Audit and the Public Prosecutor for investigation.
The minister stressed that “no one is above the law” and that Beirut’s Municipality must serve as “a model of transparency and integrity.”
According to the National News Agency, a team from the Court of Audit is now reviewing financial documents related to the suspected violation.
The move comes amid broader efforts by the Interior Ministry to tighten oversight and curb corruption in Lebanon’s municipal institutions.
