Egypt has officially opened its new Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) near the Giza pyramids, unveiling for the first time the complete collection of King Tutankhamun’s tomb in one place.
After more than two decades of planning, delays, and political upheaval, the GEM formally opened on November 1, 2025, marking a major moment in Egypt’s cultural and tourism ambitions.
According to AP News, the museum, built with an estimated cost of $1.2 billion, is considered the world’s largest museum devoted to a single civilization.
It spans about 500,000 square meters and will house more than 100,000 artifacts from across Egyptian history.
The most dramatic element of the opening is the display of over 5,000 items from Tutankhamun’s tomb, including his gold mask, throne, chariots, and burial goods, all now showcased together for the first time since their discovery in 1922.
Previously, only a portion of the collection had been exhibited due to space constraints.
In addition to the Tutankhamun collection, the museum boasts key artifacts such as the funerary boat of Pharaoh Khufu and a colossal statue of Ramses II, relocated to the museum’s halls, according to Le Monde.
The museum’s architecture features a pyramid-inspired entrance, translucent facades, and large windows framing views of the Giza plateau.
As GEM welcomes visitors, it stands not only as a showcase of Egypt’s ancient heritage but also as a symbol of modern ambition and cultural reclamation.
