LEBANON (Enmaeya News) - November 6, 2025

Contract faculty at the Lebanese University (LU) held a sit-in on Wednesday outside the university president’s office, calling for recognition and improved job status.

The faculty are requesting full-time adjunct positions, a rank between their current contract roles and tenured professorships. They have asked LU President Bassam Badran and the Ministry of Education and Higher Education to forward the issue to the Cabinet for approval.

Around 1,500 contract professors are awaiting promotion to the adjunct tier. The last such advancement occurred in 2014, and no new full-time appointments have been made since, partly due to sectarian balance considerations.

Protesters highlighted the severe economic impact of their current pay, with some earning the equivalent of just US $2 per hour, compared to full-time professors who receive US $2,000-2,500 per month. Contract faculty also lack social security coverage, transportation allowances, family benefits, and end-of-service entitlements.

Faculty representatives warned that continued “administrative neglect” is unsustainable. They said they will maintain pressure until their demands are addressed, emphasizing the need for fair treatment and job security in Lebanon’s struggling higher education sector.
