Parents often question whether daily vitamin supplements are necessary for their children. Most children who consume a balanced diet do not require multivitamins, but experts say there are circumstances where supplementation may be appropriate.
Paediatric dietitians note that supplements can benefit picky eaters, children on plant-based diets, exclusively breastfed infants, and those with medical conditions that reduce nutrient absorption.
Vitamin D is frequently recommended for breastfed infants, as breast milk may not provide adequate amounts. Iron supplementation may be necessary for children who are selective eaters, follow vegetarian or vegan diets, or have a diagnosed deficiency. Zinc and other minerals can also be considered when dietary intake is limited.
Specialists advise parents to select products specifically formulated for children, with age-appropriate dosages and without excessive “mega-doses.”
Third-party testing or certifications can help ensure the quality and accuracy of the product label. Experts also recommend avoiding supplements with added sugars, artificial colours, or flavours, and choosing options with simple ingredient lists.
Health professionals emphasize that parents should consult a paediatrician or registered dietitian before starting any supplement regimen.
Giving vitamins to children who already have a balanced diet may not provide additional benefits, and in rare cases, excessive supplementation can be harmful. Overdosing on certain nutrients, such as vitamin A or iron, may cause adverse effects.
